The Lac des Iles open-pit and underground mine, located 85 km north west of Thunder Bay in northern Ontario, is among the largest palladium mining operations in the world, producing approximately 5% of the global supply. In addition to core palladium production, the mine produces significant quantities of by-product metals including platinum, gold, copper and nickel.

Palladium is one of the six platinum group metals (PGMs), consisting of: platinum, palladium, osmium, ruthenium, iridium and rhodium. Palladium is used primarily in the production of catalytic converters used in vehicle exhaust systems. It is also used in the production of electronics, medical instruments, jewellery and alloys for dental restoration. Palladium also has potential application in the development of alternative fuel sources (fuel cells).

An underground mine expansion was completed at Lac des Iles in 2006. The site includes accommodations, recreation and catering facilities for up to 250 workers. East Coast Catering Limited has provided catering and housekeeping services at the Lac des Iles site since 2001.
